"Been meaning to get around to this all week ...
On Wednesday, the Ravens and Terrell Suggs came to an agreement on an offseason-long dispute over where on the field he was to be tagged as a franchise player. The Ravens put the linebacker tag on him, with a $8.065 tender attached to it. As an on-the-line linebacker and passing-down rush end, Suggs and his reps wanted the defensive end number, which is $8.879 million.
The compromise, according to the Baltimore Sun, comes at a number close to $8.5 million.
"His job is to rush the quarterback as a defensive end, and I thought it was unfair that he had to live under the linebacker franchise tag," said Gary Wichard, Suggs' agent. "So, Ozzie [Newsome, Ravens general manager] and I said, 'Let us resolve this as opposed to the attorneys.' I tip my hat off to Ozzie for creating a new franchise tag."
This new linebacker/end designation would apply to pretty much every 3-4 OLB -- who are in effect 9-technique, stand-up ends anyway -- since they're almost all playing down in nickel and dime packages. And that could come into play down the road with DeMarcus Ware.
