"Finished up a conversation a little bit ago with Terence Newman, here are some snippets from it after he signed a six-year, $50.2 million extension:
Obviously he was happy to have this deal done now rather than having to go into the season with the contract on his mind.
"Sometimes when you don't have a contract going into your last year, you get to thinking about the wrong things," Newman said. "You worry about staying healthy and maybe trying to make plays you don't normally make. The fact that we're done with it, I only have to worry about playing football."
On if this adds any pressure: "Personally, when you sign a big contract everybody wants to see what you're worth. I'm sure U'll get that a little bit early on with people saying,'Let's see if he's worth what he got.' You've got to expect that coming in as a high draft pick too and you've got to prove yourself. They might look over at me a little but but it's my job to make them look away. If I can do that, I'm doing my job."
Newman received a $13 million signing bonus as a rookie in 2003 and a $12 million signing bonus as part of this deal. He's not a wild spender, so I asked him what he was going to do with the new cash. His answer, "Invest it. Make it work."
Newman said he has had some discussions lately with Keyshawn Johnson about possible getting into some business partnerships, like Panera Bread, with his former teammate.
